Common questions
Beginner BJJ questions
What should I expect at my first class?
A warm welcome and a technical, safety-focused environment. We start with a gentle warm-up and move into fundamental techniques. You work at your own pace — there is no pressure to keep up with anyone else.
What should I wear?
For your first class, comfortable athletic wear like a t-shirt and shorts without zips is fine. We train both Gi and No-Gi, and we can advise you on gear once you decide to continue.
Do I need to be fit to start BJJ?
No. Jiu-jitsu is how you get fit, not something you need to be fit for. Training is scaled safely to your current level so you build conditioning as you learn.
Is BJJ dangerous?
Member safety is our priority. As a non-competition club we focus on technical control and mutual respect. Training sustainably and following instructor guidance keeps the risk of injury low compared with many other sports.
What happens during the free first week?
You get eight sessions across the week, spread from early mornings to a Saturday, and Mike teaches every one of them — so you meet the head coach each time. Come to as many as suit you. Register in advance so we can prepare for your arrival: Rogue does not take walk-ins, and classes are capped at twelve.
How often should beginners train?
Two sessions a week is a good place to start. Consistent, sustainable training matters far more than pushing too hard early on.
